AbbVie is one of America's most prominent biopharmaceutical companies, spun out of Abbott Laboratories in 2013 and built around a commercial drug portfolio of considerable scale and reach. Listed on the NYSE under the ticker ABBV, the company is perhaps best known as the maker of Humira, for many years the world's best-selling prescription medicine, though its strategic priority in recent years has been diversifying beyond Humira as biosimilar competition has eroded that franchise.
The diversification effort has been substantial. AbbVie's acquisitions of Allergan and a series of oncology and immunology assets have broadened the pipeline meaningfully, with Skyrizi and Rinvoq emerging as the next generation of growth drivers. For traders, AbbVie is an interesting combination of defensive pharmaceutical income: the company has a strong dividend track record and binary event risk around clinical trial outcomes and regulatory decisions that can move the share price sharply in either direction.
